Top Quant Firms 2026: Tier List, Salaries & Careers

Compare top quant trading firms with our editorial tier list, role-specific shortlists, published salaries and interview preparation priorities.

Top Quant Firms 2026: Tier List, Salaries & Careers

Start with Jane Street, Citadel Securities, HRT, Jump and Five Rings for trading and trading technology; add Citadel, Two Sigma and D. E. Shaw for quantitative investment research. Then expand the list around your actual skills. Optiver, IMC and SIG deserve serious attention for trading careers, while firms such as PDT, AQR, Arrowstreet and Squarepoint can be especially relevant to a research-led application.

This guide gives you a quant firm tier list, explains what the firms do, compares published salary examples and shows how to turn a list of names into an application plan. For the broader list, use our 49-firm employer directory.

Quant firm tier list: our starting shortlist

These tiers are Quant Blueprint’s editorial starting points for candidate research. They combine breadth of opportunity across quant roles with the firms we prioritize when explaining the industry. They are not measured acceptance rates, a ranking of employee pay or a claim that a lower-tier firm is a worse employer. Move a specialist firm to the top of your own list when its work fits you better.

Tier 1: core shortlistJane Street, Citadel, Citadel Securities, D. E. Shaw, Two Sigma, Hudson River Trading, Jump Trading, Five RingsLearn the differences between these businesses; choose the roles that fit your trading, research or engineering strengths.
Tier 2: expand by specialtyOptiver, IMC, SIG, DRW, Tower Research, Flow Traders, Akuna, Old Mission, Radix, XTX, Wolverine, PDT, Point72/CubistBuild targeted applications around a product, technical skill set, research style or office. Several may be a better first choice for you than a Tier 1 firm.
Tier 3: broaden the researchAQR, Millennium, Schonfeld, Squarepoint, WorldQuant, G-Research, Arrowstreet, and other employers in the directoryInvestigate the specific research, investment-team or technology opportunity. A firm-level tier tells you much less than the actual team and job description.

A PhD with strong empirical research should not demote Arrowstreet or AQR simply because they appear in a different group. A developer interested in low-latency systems should pay close attention to HRT, Jump, Tower and the engineering teams at market makers. A candidate who enjoys fast decisions and probability games should investigate the trader tracks at Jane Street, SIG, Optiver, IMC and Five Rings.

Best quant firms for your role

Quant trading and market making

Investigate Jane Street, SIG, Optiver, IMC, Five Rings and Flow Traders. Add DRW, Akuna, Old Mission and Wolverine when their products and roles fit your interests. The daily work can involve pricing, managing risk, changing quotes and deciding how to respond to new information.

Your preparation should connect probability to decisions. Being able to calculate an expected value is a start; explaining how uncertainty, position size or a changed assumption affects the trade is more useful. For systematic trader roles, add statistics, coding and market microstructure.

Compare the quant trader salary guide, then read the employer’s description closely. A floor trader, a systematic trader and an execution trader do not have identical duties.

Quant research and machine learning

Investigate Two Sigma, D. E. Shaw, Citadel, HRT, PDT, Arrowstreet, AQR, Squarepoint, WorldQuant and G-Research. Point72/Cubist and Millennium also deserve a team-specific search. Ask what data the team uses, what horizon it trades, and whether the role develops signals, portfolios, risk models or execution methods.

For a strong application, bring evidence that you can conduct research. Explain the original question, how the data was assembled, the baseline, the validation design and what would invalidate the conclusion. A complicated model with a weak experiment is not a persuasive project.

Use the research project checklist and quant researcher salary guide. If you are coming from academia, the PhD-to-quant guide helps translate research experience into an application.

Quant development and software engineering

Investigate Jane Street, HRT, Jump, Citadel Securities, IMC, DRW, Tower, Radix and XTX, then add research-platform roles at investment managers. Decide whether you want to work on low-latency execution, research tools, numerical libraries or data infrastructure.

For systems-heavy roles, prepare C++, operating systems, concurrency, memory and performance analysis. For research development, add Python, numerical methods and reproducible data pipelines. In both cases, be able to explain and test your code rather than relying on the reputation of a project or employer.

The quant developer salary guide separates graduate engineering examples from senior and principal roles.

Quant firm salaries: what is actually published?

Several firms publish substantial base salaries for specific US roles. These figures are useful starting points, with degree, location and level kept attached.

Firm and rolePublished baseScope and source
Jane Street quantitative trader$300,000 / yearNew York; employer posting
HRT algorithm developer$300,000 / yearUS base for 2027 graduates; employer posting
Five Rings quantitative trader$300,000 / yearNew York, 2027 campus intake; employer posting
SIG systematic trader$300,000 / yearNew York, 2027 master’s intake; employer posting
IMC quantitative researcher$250,000 / yearChicago, 2027 BS/MS intake; employer posting
Tower trader/researcher$150,000–$250,000 / yearNew York/Chicago, 2027 intake; employer posting
Flow Traders graduate trader$175,000 / yearNew York; employer posting

Base salary is not total compensation. A first-year package may also include a signing payment and a guaranteed or discretionary bonus. For example, a hypothetical $250,000 base plus a $50,000 signing payment and $100,000 guaranteed bonus produces $400,000 guaranteed first-year cash. It does not establish a $400,000 recurring salary. A performance target belongs in a separate scenario until the terms make it a guarantee.

Use the salary database for more firms and levels, the comparison tool for side-by-side disclosures, and the offer calculator for the package in front of you.

Market maker, hedge fund or bank?

Market makers and proprietary trading firms trade using their own capital and may focus on quoting prices, managing inventory, relative value or systematic strategies. Examples include Jane Street, Optiver, IMC, SIG, HRT and Jump, though their businesses and roles differ.

Investment managers and hedge funds manage investment strategies for clients or funds. A researcher might develop signals, improve portfolio construction or support an investment team. Two Sigma, D. E. Shaw, AQR, Arrowstreet and the investment teams at Citadel, Millennium and Point72 are relevant starting points.

Banks hire quants for pricing, risk, model validation, electronic trading and other functions. A bank quant role can be a strong match for derivatives mathematics or financial engineering, but it should not be assumed to have the same work or pay structure as a proprietary trader.

Read our quant firm business-model guide if these distinctions are new to you. Keeping them straight improves both your application targeting and your interview answers.

Build a shortlist that can produce interviews

  1. Choose a primary role. Trader, researcher and developer applications should show different evidence. You can explore more than one, but each application needs a clear case.
  2. Choose feasible offices and entry routes. Record graduation requirements, work authorization, start dates and whether the role is a campus or experienced hire.
  3. Build a mix of employers. Include your strongest targets, specialist firms where your background fits, and a wider set of teams you want to understand. Tiers should not make your application list unnecessarily narrow.
  4. Attach one preparation task to each application. This might be probability practice, a stronger research write-up, a systems project or a mock interview.
  5. Track the real deadline and next step. Use the employer’s current listing; an old directory date is not confirmation that a vacancy remains open.

The job board separates recently checked openings from reviewed role references. The four-week study plan gives you a framework for turning interview gaps into weekly work.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top quant firms?

Our core shortlist is Jane Street, Citadel, Citadel Securities, D. E. Shaw, Two Sigma, HRT, Jump and Five Rings. The best firm for you depends on role and team: Optiver, IMC or SIG may lead your trading list, while AQR, Arrowstreet or PDT may be especially relevant to your research interests.

Is Citadel the same as Citadel Securities?

No. Citadel’s investment-management business and Citadel Securities’ market-making business are distinct. Check the employing entity, team and role rather than combining their salaries or application processes.

Which quant firms pay $500,000?

The employer disclosures above are base salaries, not evidence that every hire receives a $500,000 package. Evaluate an actual offer using base, signing payments and written bonus terms. A firm’s reputation or a single reported package does not establish your likely compensation.

Do I need a PhD to work at a quant firm?

Not for every role. Some research positions require one, while many trading and software roles have bachelor’s or master’s entry routes. IMC’s cited graduate-research role accepts BS/MS candidates, and HRT’s cited graduate algorithm role includes undergraduate/master’s candidates. Read the requirements for the position you want.

How do I prepare for quant interviews?

Begin with probability, expected value and clear problem solving, then specialize. Researchers need statistics and defensible projects; developers need programming and systems; traders need decisions under uncertainty and market intuition.
